THE BLACK EXPERIENCE IN DESIGN X DID

Harnessing the power of the DID Collaborative often means working together to achieve goals, but it is equally as important to highlight individual DID member successes. DID Founding Advisor Lesley-Ann Noel Ph.D. is one of six editors of a collection of insights from over 70 designers and creatives, a new book entitled The Black Experience in Design: Identity, Expression, & Reflection.

DID Team Member Spotlight: Shanttel Liberato

Meet Shanttel Liberato. As the first official member of the DID Management Team, Shanttel kickstarted a surge of member growth and internal development from her start date on May 24, 2021, which is still moving fast and furious to this day. While Shanttel inspires us in her work ethic and professional conduct each day, her personal story and hopes for the future inspire us even further.

Behind the DID illustrations

If asked who invented the automobile, the light bulb, or the iPhone, chances are you can answer pretty easily. What about the doorknob, traffic light, or elevator? These everyday items that make our lives easier all have one thing in common—they are the creative innovations of Black designers. Often overlooked, Black history is rich with inventors, visionaries, and engineers! Check out this beautiful illustration by Forest Young, Head of Design at Wolff Olins, and Kelly O’Hara, Manager of Art Direction at Herman Miller, that highlights just a few of the Black creatives who continuously impact our lives through design.
