From the curve of a steering wheel to the intuitive ease of using an app on your smartphone, creativity flourishes when diversity is at its core. However, the design industry has been slow to diversify, struggling to recruit and retain diverse design talent. Less than 5% of designers across disciplines are Black, and other people of color, including Latinx, Asian, Indigenous, and multiracial individuals, remain significantly under-represented. For example, only 9% of architecture professionals and 10% of graphic designers come from racial or ethnic minority backgrounds, compared to 23% in the general workforce.
The Diversity in Design (DID) Collaborative was established in 2021 to cultivate spaces where Black and other underrepresented designers feel seen, heard, and supported. DID is dedicated to shaping an industry that mirrors the richness and variety of our country, communities, and markets.
